just a few words...

"All men have an emotion to kill; when they strongly dislike some one they involuntarily wish he was dead. I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction." ~ Clarence Darrow (in his biography, The Story of My Life)

Apparently a slightly altered version of this is going around the internet, attributed to Mark Twain.  But from what I've read, Mr. Twain actually quoted Mr. Darrow when he said it.  Whatever - still, true words for many, I guess.  Although, honestly, I can't say I've ever wished anyone dead.  Out of my life? Yes. Definitely.  But not dead.

I'm not saying it's wrong for anyone to feel relief or even satisfaction over another's death, or even to wish for it.  I'm just saying for me, celebrating anyone's death (even an enemy's) doesn't feel good.  While certainly not in mourning, I've made no real celebration of recent events either.  Hopefully, with the loss of one, life will be better for thousands of others.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Okay,  that's it.  Have a great day, filled with sunshine and good health!

  1. I agree with you - the celebratory behavior of some people in the wake of OBL death makes me uncomfortable, sad and repulsed.

  2. I have to say I was very disturbed to see the celebrations as well. I don't mind the deed was done but I don't feel the jubilence is appropriate.

  4. Ah...I have to say I was a little apprehensive about posting this, and then about looking at comments afterwards, too. I should have known better. Thank you all. Janet, I feel the exact same way about the mob mentality aspect. I'm glad to see there are still some pockets of sanity and humanity in this country (right here in this group, for instance!).

  5. I like Mayor Giuliani's comment, "Revenge is not a noble sentiment, but it is a human one." I don't think anyone can look at the recent events and not feel the gravity. The taking of a life should never be an event to celebrate. I think some of the celebrations are taking place because no one really knows how to react to such an event. Kind of like the nervous laugh. We now need to put it behind us and get on with other business.
